Aman is renowned for impeccably designed resorts all over the world, so it’s perhaps surprising that the luxury hotel group hasn’t made a foray into a spa collection before. Now, though, you can enjoy a little Aman magic at home thanks to the launch of new holistic range Aman Skincare – while upping your bathroom shelfie ante with the sake bottle-inspired designs by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma

Recently renowned for the cliff-like V&A Dundee museum building in Scotland, Kengo’s intention with this beauty brief was to capture the essence of Aman in physical form. The curves of the handsomely shaped bottles fit beautifully in the hand and it’s a sensorial experience – from the smoothness of touch to the appearance of the natural wood grain – and, of course, the sublime scents and star performance of the unisex products inside.

Categorised into three skincare ‘pathways’ – Grounding, Nourishing and Purifying – the sustainable collection takes its cue from nature and ancient wellness traditions, with ingredients influenced by the various Aman resort destinations.

Aman Skincare features 30 all-natural products for the face, body and bath, with evocative names such as ‘Jade Mask Concentrate’ and ‘Sacred Heart Balm’, the latter a mood-boosting, antioxidant-rich balm combining hydrating murumuru seed, shea and cupuaçu butters with uplifting tuberose, frangipani and vanilla oils. It’s all extremely transportative – and with prices starting at £40, nicely aspirational too.

Vilhelm Parfumerie – New scented candles and eau de parfum

New York perfume house Vilhelm Parfumerie has launched five seductively scented candles and a figgy eau de parfum to satisfy our senses this Christmas

A while ago we featured the debut collection by Vilhelm Parfumerie, in our opinion one of the most interesting niche perfume labels to emerge in the past five years. It was founded in New York by Swedish-born former model and handbag designer Jan Ahlgren, who enlisted the talents of renowned nose Jerome Epinette after commissioning him to develop a custom fragrance to scent leather goods. Now the brand has unveiled five new scented candles, each with a story behind them and packaged in the perfumery’s signature fluted yellow glass. Top of our wish list are ‘Vilhelm’s Pipe’, which combines ginger, wild honey, tobacco leaves and sandalwood and is inspired by the lingering scent of pipe smoke at Ahlgren family gatherings; and ‘Art Deco’, a crisp scent that evokes the clean-lined elevators of the Empire State Building through notes of clove buds, cassis, papyrus and vetiver.

Also new this winter is a very on-trend fig scent, ‘Purple Fig’, inspired by the Cité du Figuier, a tree-lined oasis on rue Oberkampf in Paris. Recreating the woody-milky scent of figs with notes of cassis, angelica seeds, galbanum and cedarwood, it has a fresh lemon top note and a floral aspect thanks to the inclusion of cyclamen. We think it’s a hit.

Penhaligon's – 'Portraits'

British fragrance house Penhaligon's has used animal heads to characterise a fictitious aristocratic family in its new 'Portraits' collection. Lady Mary would approve...

You wouldn’t be surprised to spot a classic Penhaligon’s fragrance on the dressing table of any of the Downton Abbey ladies, so it feels fitting that the British heritage perfumer has taken inspiration from a similar aristocratic sphere for its new ‘Portraits’ collection. Described by the brand as ‘the first olfactive fiction’, it’s a set of four perfumes, each of which embodies the ambivalent character of a member of an imaginary family. Thus the patriarch ‘Lord George’ is a masculine mix of rum and tonka bean, while his wife ‘Lady Blanche’ is a ‘green floral narcotic’ reflecting her secret scheme to poison her unfaithful husband! Each character in this colourful universe is represented by a different golden bottle stopper that might be said to represent their animal spirit – Lord George, for instance, is a majestic stag. Last but not least, the ornate packaging by Icelandic-born, UK-based artist Kristjana S Williams conjures up a magical world by interweaving fragments of Victorian engravings with contemporary illustration.

Find this extravagant collection at Penhaligon’s newly unveiled flagship store in London’s Regent Street, designed by architectural studio Al-Jawad Pike. It came about after the studio created a window display for the store, which won a RIBA Award for Best Window Installation in 2014. Inspired by the brand’s original boutique in St James, English panelled rooms and the art of fragrance making, it features an elegant curved frontage, intricate floor and wood-clad walls.
