Icelandic singer Asgeir is leaving the hot springs and volcanoes behind to enchant us with his enigmatic brand of alternative folk
BY DEE IVA
There's a certain clarity of vocal that seems to be an Icelandic characteristic. Plaintive, soaring and occasionally melancholic, it's a sound that cuts through everything else with effortless ease. Asgeir Einarsson's haunting vocals are at the forefront of this collection of folk-tinged songs, which veer between simple acoustic arrangements and synthy electronic soundscapes. Usually singing in his native tongue, Einarsson has enlisted the services of fellow beardy balladeer John Grant (another DesignFizz fave) to translate his father's original lyrics into English. Our go-to tracks are King And Cross and Head In The Snow, which pair layered harmonies with trippy sequenced rhythms, and closing track Soothe This Pain, which has more than a touch of James Blake about it. We're loving the monochromatic album artwork, too, so all in all it's a seriously stylish package on every level.
