The annual Milan Furniture Fair is almost upon us and premier British design show designjunction promises to be the hottest show in town

BY DEE IVA

Ah, Milano! Another year and yet another new design district! For 2015, San Babila in central Milan has been added to the list of must-see design destinations and the Fizz's favourite design show will be right in the heart of it

This year sees designjunction taking over the Casa dell'Opera Nazionale Ballila, a vast 1930s theatre and school, exhibiting 40 international brands over three floors. A carefully curated selection of new furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories will be on show alongside pop-up shops, installations and an artisan café designed by British furniture brand Case.

Here are just a few of our must-see stands on show this year...

Colè Italia
Only four years old, young Italian company Colè Italia takes its cue from the Bauhaus and classic Scandi design. Clean lines, blocked colour and innovative shapes create eye-catching pieces perfect for modern interiors. We particularly love the 'Sushi Kart' by Lorenza Bozzoli (seen to the right of the above picture) and the 'Opto Folding Screen' by Catharina Lorenz and Steffen Kaz (right).

Beyond Object
With desktop accessories like these we'd never leave the office. London design company Beyond Object will be showing this gorgeous range of the simple necessities you just can't do without, albeit with added va va voom. Desk organisers, tape dispensers, pencil sharpeners and letter openers are all given a luxe makeover that will guarantee envious glances from your work colleagues. The 'Cantili' tape dispenser in copper (right) is just too stylish for words. One piece of advice, just don't leave these beauties out overnight...

Luke Irwin London
One of London's top rug companies, Luke Irwin, will be gracing the floors of designjunction edit Milan. Irwin's spacious Pimlico showroom resembles a contemporary art gallery with enormous colourful rugs from Nepal and India adorning the walls. From the barely-there faded designs of the 'Ozymandias' collection to the arresting patterns of the 'Geometric' range, Irwin's hand-knotted bespoke rugs are like abstract textural paintings. We're digging the psycho-illustrative 'Idlewild' design (above), which positively fizzes with energy!

New Works
Pieces with personality is a phrase that could be used to sum up the output of Danish brand New Works. They like to play in that shifting territory that exists somewhere between design, craft and art, mixing materials, shapes and finishes together to create interesting objects with plenty of character. Among the new items on show will be the 'Bowl Table Lamp' (above) by Knut Bendik Humlevik which mixes copper and glass and is reminiscent of old lanterns. We're also hoping to see the rough-luxe 'Crowd Candleholders' (right) by David Taylor which fuse concrete, copper, wood and brass into lyrical mini sculptures.

Tom Dixon
Tom Dixon, the UK's most rock and roll designer, will be displaying new ranges of lighting and furniture in The Cinema, a specially created interactive show. The classic wingback chair is given a very glamorous update in the 'Wingback' collection (right) which also includes a sofa, dining chair and ottoman covered in striking Kvadrat fabrics with sexy copper or solid oak legs. Lighting fanatics will go crazy for 'Lens', a sparkling cluster of triangular lenses and the distorted organic shapes of 'Melt' (above) which resembles oozing hot-blown glass.

Dixon junkies will also be able to buy a selection of sleek accessories at the show. Now that's what we call instant gratification...
