Australia’s pastry wizard Adriano Zumbo has opened his first Melbourne patisserie. DesignFizz falls under his spell...

As if Adriano Zumbo's famous Zumbarons (macaroons) and croissant-doughnut hybrid Zonuts aren’t reason enough to hightail it to his new Melbourne patisserie, we’re loving the delicious design.

Wacky sweets wizard Zumbo is renowned for his innovative cakes, pastries and desserts – including a terrifying croquembouche whipped up as a MasterChef challenge – but until now his tasty creations have only been available direct from his Sydney café and stores. No surprise, then, that queues formed early outside his South Yarra patisserie in October when news of his first Melbourne launch broke. While the ranks of cute cakes impressed us, our eyes were drawn to the shiny, sexy interiors, too. Making a compact space feel inviting, the girly-industrial trend starts here.

A swirly, hot-pink neon light shaped like Zumbo’s signature dangles from the roof, its rosy hue reflected in hundreds of wall panels. This surreal hall of mirrors was the brainchild of local design firm Elenberg Fraser. Taking inspiration from Melbourne’s golden age and Victorian-era ornamentation, its team has updated the classic molded plaster and pressed tin ceilings of yore. Vacuum-formed and metallised to create zany distortions, the store’s plastic wall and ceiling panels deliver a dizzying effect. Window graphics and upcycled furniture, layered with self-expanding foam and finished in pink and white silicon, add to the kinky, dripping, iced affair. Imagine a marshmallow crossed with a gelato and you’re there…
